The BeanBlog Beginnings.

This is very exciting. Add “creating a blog” and “setting up a website” to the very long list of new and self-taught technology skills I’ve had to learn in the last few years. This may prove a bit more entertaining with a significant (enjoyable) difference in the homework required.

As for the name, well…. beans are used in the English language as idioms for many things, and I’m also a big fan of legumes, coffee, and chocolate. The name really stuck when I struggled to come up with something more polished and read this quote on Lexico.com: “she was laughing and shouting and generally full of beans” and that sealed the deal for me. Anyone who knows me well can confirm.

Using your bean, or in this case your brain, is important when you think about as complex a subject as food. As a dietetics student I care about food a lot – both in taste and function – and I’ve used a significant amount of my brain to study these concepts over the last five years. Food is fun, medicine, culture, love, and a beautiful inanimate object we project ourselves onto and into. We are simultaneously obsessed and repulsed by it – our lives can revolve around it, and I just can’t stop asking “why?”

So I’m going to use my bean to analyze all these different food experiences and put my unique kooky twist on them for you all. If I can get you guys to laugh with me (and maybe convince you to eat more beans!) then this blog will have been worth it.
